Everybody tells you that you must have a website and you must have a blog but nobody tells you how – or why. In this workshop you will learn the key steps to creating your blog but, more importantly, what you can use one for and how it will become an important part of your creative work.

That’s true whether you’re a writer, journalist, musician or actor: you are already creating work that blogs can showcase and you will benefit from reaching audiences through a well constructed, targeted blog. This workshop will tell you how.

Filled with practical advice and time-saving tips, this workshop covers:

  • the choices you need to make before setting up your blog
  • what exactly to blog about
  • how to reach an audience that matters for all your creative work
  • what to do with that audience – how to engage with them
  • using your blog to make your website fresh
  • creating new material and reasons to contact your clients.

Who should attend?

Those who have thought about writing a blog but are not sure how or really certain why it will help and those who have already started blogging but need help in making their blogs more focused and effective.

Having goals in our lives sets a direction and helps us make the decisions on what to focus our efforts on. Some find it hard to create goals at all, while others have no problem setting goals, but are unable to motivate themselves to achieve them.

There can be all sorts of reasons for this, for example, your goals may not actually be your goals, but other people’s that you have (consciously or unconsciously) adopted, or perhaps securing the dream job means you’ll have to travel extensively and you are worried that this will have a negative impact on your family life.

This workshop aims to give you tools to process all your aims, now and in the future, so you can create clear, achievable, compelling goals, which are compatible with and do not conflict with any other areas of your life.

Workshop Content

This course will:

  • help you define clear, achievable goals which are within your control
  • provide a model to allow you to check your goals to ensure that you really want them, and that achieving them will not result in you losing something else that is important to you
  • give you an opportunity to amend or re-configure your goal to make it fully desirable to you
  • identify what might obstruct your goal, and what you can do about it
  • understand what the purpose of your goal is to you and become fully aligned to it - making it a compelling goal
  • learn tools to tackle difficulties
  • identify your first steps.

Freelances working in the creative industries who want to improve their goal setting and goal achievement capabilities.

Using social media effectively can help you get better and more work as well as to engage with like minded professionals. This workshop looks at how you get started and how to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter as a valuable business tool rather than a means of sharing photos of your cat!

Who should attend?

This course is for people who've not started on social media (Facebook and Twitter particularly) or who have signed up but done little else or don’t really see the point of it. We look at:

  • what is meant by social media
  • differences between Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others
  • what it can do for you
  • how to get set up
  • how to construct a profile
  • how to be time-efficient
  • tips and tricks.

Note: This workshop includes tutor demonstration, instruction and group interaction. You will not be expected to go online at the session but you will need to follow up post session to implement what you have learnt.

Everyone is talking about the growing importance of video on websites and social media. There’s no doubt about it, for creative professionals video is becoming a vital ingredient in promoting yourself, your band, event or show.

But you need professional equipment and expertise to produce a self-taped audition, an interview or snappy promo, right? Wrong! With a decent smartphone (Android or iPhone/iPad) and a bit of practise, YOU can do it. And this hands-on, one-day workshop will show you how.

This one-day workshop will help you unlock the potential of your mobile device (android or iPhone/iPad) as a powerful tool for planning and creating high quality video.

It is for complete beginners. By the end of the day you will know how to shoot and edit video you can be proud of, and how to upload it to your website, YouTube or social media. It includes:

  • Learn simple tips for shooting great pictures with your mobile
  • Combine images with music (or narration) to create a dynamic promo video
  • Shoot and edit professional-looking video interviews plus Q&A-style videos
  • Shoot and edit a series of video clips, with text and titles, that build into a snappy promo video
  • Combine a series of video comments into a ‘vox pop’ (great for audience reviews)
  • Upload video to social media.

Who should attend?

This workshop is aimed at freelance members who want to learn how to make and edit simple videos. No prior knowledge of video shooting or editing is required. Unlike our previous course for this level (i.e., How to shoot and Edit using iPhone/IPad) you can use android or iPhone/iPad - see below for details.

What should I bring?

You will need to bring your own Android smartphone (the newer, the better), iPhone (5, 6, 7) or iPhone/iPad mini. You must have the free Quik video editor app already installed. Other apps may be downloaded during the workshop, so please bring your password for the Apple App Store / Google Play Store, plus login details for social media accounts (if relevant). It will help if your mobile’s software and apps are up to date and the memory is not full.

We have a limited number of tripods and mounts for use during the workshop. However, if you have your own, please bring them.

Getting your message across and making the right impression relies on both what you say and how you say it. In this one-day workshop, you will learn how thoughts, intentions and feelings are expressed through physical behaviours and how to ensure that the non-verbal messages you convey create the right impact.

Content

Clear communication is key to building successful working relationships. This workshop aims to help you learn about the non-verbal messages that are conveyed through physical behaviour, i.e., body language, so that you can communicate more effectively and achieve better results in any given circumstance whether it’s making a positive impression when meeting new colleagues or being more convincing when pitching ideas. It includes:

  • Why body language matters
  • Methods of conveying non-verbal messages
  • How our body language can affect the way we think, feel and behave
  • Methods of improving non-verbal communication
  • Practise on how to improve body language.

Expected learning outcomes

  • Increased awareness of non-verbal communication methods
  • Increased awareness of specific areas in which body language creates impact
  • Greater ability to communicate non-verbally
  • Greater confidence in using non-verbal communication techniques.

Who should attend

Those freelances who wish to improve their ability to communicate to achieve better all round results.

No formal qualifications are required, just a desire to improve the skills that will help your work and social life.

If you do not let us know this will disadvantage another member. Also, we may lose the funds that enable us to provide these workshops to all members including yourself.

NOTE: 1. If we were to postpone or cancel this workshop due to unforeseen circumstances (this has happened only twice in five years due to tutor illness and a tube strike), we will be unable to reimburse any costs such as pre-booked travel expenses. If this were to happen in the future, we will email and telephone you as soon as we know that there is a cancellation and attempt to re-schedule the workshop asap. 2. We are required to undertake a short equality & diversity survey, which you will need to fill in before or at the workshop. The information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence and processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and will help in our commitment to E&D.

IMPORTANT: Unfortunately we cannot always offer everyone who applies a place due to high demand. We set up a waiting list and contact people if there are cancellations. If you do NOT receive confirmation that you have secured a place, please do not turn up on the day because we will not be able to admit you. However, please keep applying because we work hard to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to attend at some point.
